Anthropic has confirmed the existence of Claude Mythos — its most capable model ever built — and simultaneously confirmed that the public will not get access to it. Instead, fifty organizations have been granted gated access under a program called Project Glasswing, with a narrow mandate: use Mythos to find vulnerabilities in their own infrastructure before adversaries can exploit the model's capabilities to find those vulnerabilities first.
This is a new pattern for the AI industry. Not just "responsible release." Not just "staged rollout." A frontier model withheld from commercial availability entirely, deployed exclusively as a defensive tool.
Context
Anthropic has published a responsible scaling policy that ties model release decisions to capability thresholds — particularly around cybersecurity and weapons assistance. As models grow more capable at identifying exploitable vulnerabilities, the risk calculus for public release shifts: a sufficiently capable model becomes an attack amplifier at scale if it can be queried by adversaries without restriction.
Claude Opus 4.7, released the same day as the Mythos disclosure, already includes automatic blocking of high-risk cybersecurity requests baked into the model itself. The logic: If your adversary gains access to a model at Mythos's capability level — through theft, distillation, or parallel development — you want to have already run that model against your own defenses. Project Glasswing lets organizations find and patch their own attack surface before it becomes an active liability.
The timeline: Anthropic has not committed to a public release date for Mythos. The company says learnings from Glasswing — specifically how to build effective model-level capability controls — will inform whether and when broader release becomes viable.
Why This Matters
It formalizes a new release category. Until now, the spectrum ran from "public" to "enterprise API" to "government-restricted." Glasswing introduces a fourth option: gated defensive deployment, where the model is never commercially available but is actively used by a curated set of trusted actors.
It reveals how Anthropic thinks about capability risk. Anthropic is not claiming Mythos is unsafe in an absolute sense. If it remains entirely opaque, the disclosure itself looks more like a strategic positioning move than a security initiative.
