Anthropic Tests 'Claude Money': Bank Account Linking Inside Claude iOS App
By Hector Herrera | September 18, 2026 | Finance
Anthropic is building a "Money" feature into the Claude iOS app that would allow users to link bank accounts and give Claude persistent access to their financial data — moving the AI assistant from answering one-off financial questions to acting as a continuous personal finance advisor. The feature was discovered in unreleased interface components between September 14–17, and Anthropic has not yet announced a launch date.
This is the third major AI assistant to enter the personal-finance space. ChatGPT Finances launched May 15 through a Plaid bank-linking integration; Perplexity entered in April. If Claude Money ships, the question of which AI assistant handles your money becomes a mainstream consumer decision — not a power-user curiosity.
What the Feature Looks Like
Screenshots of the unreleased interface show a dedicated "Money" tab inside the Claude iOS app with the following components:
- Bank account connection — linking accounts through what appears to be a Plaid-based integration
- Spending breakdowns — categorized views of where money is going
- Trend visualization — month-over-month comparisons and pattern identification
- Budgeting guidance — AI-generated recommendations based on actual transaction data
The key distinction from current Claude financial capabilities: today, a user would need to manually export their bank statement, upload it, and ask questions about it. Claude Money would make that a one-time setup, after which Claude has continuous access to live account data — no re-uploads, no manual exports.
The Context: AI Assistants Racing Into Finance
The timing reflects a broader race among AI companies to become the interface layer between consumers and their financial lives.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Finances on May 15 through Plaid, allowing users to connect bank accounts for spending analysis within ChatGPT. The feature has been available for four months.
Perplexity entered personal finance in April with a similar account-linking feature.

Anthropic is now building toward the same capability for Claude — positioning the assistant not as a tool you consult, but as a layer that always knows your financial context.
For AI companies, personal finance data is among the most valuable contextual signals available. Knowing your income, spending patterns, recurring subscriptions, and savings behavior lets an AI assistant give advice that's actually grounded in your reality rather than generic guidance.
What This Would Change for Users
The practical shift is significant. Right now, asking Claude a financial question — "Am I spending too much on restaurants?" — requires pasting transaction data into the chat. With persistent account access, you ask in plain language and Claude answers with your real numbers.
Concrete use cases that become trivially easy:
- "How much did I spend on groceries last month compared to the month before?"
- "I want to save $500 more per month — where can I cut?"
- "Flag any subscriptions I haven't used in 60 days"
- "Is my spending on track for my year-end savings goal?"
None of these require a financial advisor or a dedicated budgeting app if an AI assistant already has the data.
The Open Questions
Anthropic has not confirmed the feature publicly, which means important details about implementation remain unknown.
Data handling is the primary concern. Will transaction data be used to train Anthropic's models? What is the retention policy? Can users delete their financial data and revoke access cleanly? These are not hypothetical concerns — the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is actively monitoring the intersection of AI and financial data access, and any major AI assistant offering bank linking will face regulatory attention.
Security is the second open question. Plaid-based integrations have a solid track record, but the security of AI-plus-banking access depends on how Anthropic implements session management, what data is transmitted to Anthropic's servers versus staying on-device, and how the integration handles multi-factor authentication flows.
Disclaimer: This article covers a news development in AI product development. It is not financial advice. Decisions about connecting your bank account to any third-party application should be made after reviewing that application's privacy policy and data handling practices.
What to Watch
The launch date and Anthropic's data handling policy are the two signals to watch. If Claude Money ships with transparent data practices and CFPB-compliant disclosures, it will be a significant product moment for Anthropic — moving Claude from an LLM API into a consumer financial platform. If it launches without clear answers on data usage, expect fast regulatory scrutiny.
The broader question for the industry: as ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity all build financial data access into their core apps, banks and fintech companies will have to decide whether AI assistants are partners to integrate with — or competitors for the primary customer relationship.
