About Google DeepMind
Google DeepMind is the AI research division of Alphabet, formed in 2023 by merging Google Brain and DeepMind. It is one of the world's premier AI research laboratories, responsible for breakthroughs ranging from AlphaGo (defeating the world Go champion) to AlphaFold (predicting the 3D structure of virtually every known protein).
DeepMind was founded in 2010 in London by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleiman, and acquired by Google in 2014 for approximately $500 million. Google Brain, founded by Andrew Ng and Jeff Dean, operated as Google's internal AI research team. The 2023 merger combined DeepMind's fundamental research prowess with Brain's product integration expertise under the leadership of Demis Hassabis.
Google DeepMind develops the Gemini family of multimodal models that power Google Search, Google Cloud AI, Android, and the Bard/Gemini chatbot. The lab's research spans reinforcement learning, neuroscience-inspired AI, protein structure prediction, weather forecasting, materials science, and mathematical reasoning. With thousands of researchers and access to Google's vast computational resources (TPUs), Google DeepMind operates at a scale matched by few organizations worldwide.
Technology & Approach
Google DeepMind's research philosophy combines fundamental scientific inquiry with large-scale engineering. The lab is known for reinforcement learning (AlphaGo, AlphaZero, MuZero), which learns through self-play and exploration rather than human demonstrations. For language models, Gemini uses a natively multimodal architecture trained on text, images, audio, and video from the ground up — unlike models that bolt vision onto a text model. Google's custom TPU (Tensor Processing Unit) chips provide the compute backbone, and the lab conducts extensive work on AI safety, interpretability, and responsible deployment.
