Anthropic Retires Claude Haiku 3 Today, Forces Migration to Pricier Haiku 4.5

Claude 3 Haiku is dead as of today. Anthropic officially deprecated the claude-3-haiku-20240307 model on April 19, 2026 — any API calls using that model ID now return errors. Developers who haven't migrated to Claude Haiku 4.5 are discovering broken applications this morning.

This is a forced, no-grace-period cutover. Anthropic offered no automatic fallback, no extended deprecation window for existing integrations, and no warning beyond their model deprecations page.

Background

Claude 3 Haiku launched in March 2024 as Anthropic's speed-optimized, budget-tier model. At $0.25 per million input tokens and $1.25 per million output tokens, it became the go-to choice for high-volume workloads — customer support bots, document classification pipelines, real-time content moderation — where cost mattered more than raw capability.

It sat in the Claude 3 model family alongside Sonnet and Opus, all of which have now been superseded by newer generations. The Claude 3 lineup was Anthropic's first generation of models to gain significant commercial adoption outside of early-adopter circles.

What Changed

That's a 4x price increase across the board. A workload that cost $250/month on Haiku 3 will cost $1,000/month on Haiku 4.5 with no changes to volume.

• No automatic migration: Anthropic did not reroute old model IDs to the new model. You must update your code.

Impact on Developers and Businesses

This deprecation lands differently depending on where you sit:

If you're a solo developer or small team running Haiku-based tools on a shoestring budget, today's outage may have already cost you. Broken bots, failed pipelines, and unhappy users are the immediate consequence of missing the deprecation notice. The fix is straightforward — update your model ID — but the ongoing cost increase is real.

If you're a company running high-volume AI pipelines, the pricing jump is material. A customer service platform processing 50 million output tokens per month was paying $62,500. That same workload now costs $250,000. That's a line-item budget conversation, not a five-minute code change.

The capability argument Anthropic makes: Claude Haiku 4.5 is substantially more capable than Haiku 3. It handles more complex instructions, produces better reasoning, and has a larger context window. For many use cases, the quality improvement may justify the cost — or allow developers to reduce token usage through better prompting. But that calculation takes time to run, and developers got zero runway today.

What to Watch

Watch for competitor moves. Google, OpenAI, and Mistral all offer budget-tier models in the $0.10–$0.50 per million token range. With Haiku 4.5 priced at $1/$5, Anthropic's cheapest model is now more expensive than many competitors' mid-tier offerings. Expect developers who are cost-sensitive to benchmark alternatives seriously.

Watch for Anthropic's response to backlash. Model deprecations without grace periods are unusual in the API economy. If developer anger registers loudly enough, Anthropic may clarify their deprecation policy — or even restore access temporarily. No such announcement has been made as of this writing.
