Definition A structured representation of entities and the relationships between them, stored as a graph of nodes (entities) and edges (relationships). Knowledge graphs encode factual world knowledge in a machine-queryable form that complements the statistical knowledge inside LLMs.

Major knowledge graphs include Google's Knowledge Graph (powering search info panels), Wikidata, and domain-specific graphs in pharmaceuticals and finance. Combining knowledge graphs with LLMs — a technique called graph-RAG — allows models to answer questions requiring multi-hop reasoning across interconnected facts with higher accuracy than vector similarity retrieval alone.
