Definition A generative AI model that learns to create data — most commonly images — by gradually reversing a noise-addition process. During training, the model learns to denoise progressively noisier versions of real images; at inference it starts from pure noise and iteratively refines a coherent output.

Diffusion models power Stable Diffusion, DALL·E 3, Midjourney, and Sora. They outperform earlier GANs on image fidelity and diversity while being more stable to train. The key innovation is the denoising diffusion probabilistic model (DDPM) framework, which treats generation as a Markov chain of denoising steps guided by a learned score function.
