The honest answer: autonomous vehicles are demonstrably safer than average human drivers in the conditions where they operate, but they're not ready for every scenario, and the question of "how safe is safe enough" remains unsettled.
What the data shows:
Waymo (the most deployed autonomous taxi service) published comprehensive safety data showing their vehicles were involved in significantly fewer crashes than human drivers across millions of miles of autonomous driving in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. Their data showed 85% fewer injury-causing crashes and 57% fewer police-reported crashes compared to human benchmarks.
Cruise (GM's autonomous vehicle unit) reported similar safety advantages before pausing operations in late 2023 following a pedestrian dragging incident that raised questions about post-crash response protocols rather than crash avoidance.
Tesla's Autopilot/FSD presents a more complex picture. Where they still struggle:

Levels of autonomy (SAE scale):
